25 Sep How to Wear Cufflinks: Shirt Cuffs, Fastening and Fit
Cufflinks fasten the two sides of a shirt cuff through paired buttonholes. Before choosing a pair, check that the shirt has French cuffs, double cuffs or another cuff made to accept cufflinks.
Check the shirt cuff first
A standard button cuff normally closes with its attached button. A cufflink-compatible cuff has holes on both sides so a separate fastener can pass through the layers. French or double cuffs are folded back before the holes are aligned.
How to put cufflinks on
- Put on the shirt and fold the cuffs into their intended position.
- Bring the cuff holes together so they line up.
- Pass the cufflink post through all the aligned holes, keeping the coin or decorative face on the outside.
- Secure the fastener and check that the cuff is held together without pinching.
How the finished cuff should look
The visible face should sit on the outside of the wrist. The cuff layers should remain connected when the arm moves, while leaving enough room for normal wrist movement. Repeat the same orientation on the other cuff so the pair looks balanced.
When cufflinks are commonly worn
Cufflinks are often worn with formal shirts for weddings, dinners, celebrations, presentations and some business occasions. The shirt determines whether cufflinks can be used; they are not a replacement for the sewn button on an ordinary button cuff.
Choosing a dated coin design
Once the shirt type is confirmed, choose a country, coin and visible year that suits the wearer. Customers select the coin year; Birthday Cufflinks products are not engraved or personalized.
